Tough Senior Night for Grizz on volleyball court; Bobcats, Pirates win
By Shawn Harrison sports editor

It was the final home volleyball match for nine Logan seniors. The Grizzlies fought hard to try and have a successful Senior Night, but fell in three to Juan Diego. The Soaring Eagle was just a little better in finishing each set and took the win, 25-15, 25-20, 25-19.

“We are still trying to figure out how to play in pressure situations,” Logan coach Jenn Ioane said. “As a coach, I’m still learning how to do that too. We struggle a little with pressure. We’re still learning and pushing.”

Despite playing Juan Diego (11-7, 6-2 Region 11) close throughout most of the match, Logan (5-19, 3-5) never enjoyed a lead in any of the sets. The Grizzlies did tie up the score several times, but just couldn’t get over the hump.

“Knowing this was the last time we were going to play here, we still started off slow,” Logan setter Jordan Olsen said. “… We’ve been working on finishing better, but we need to push through the end and have confidence.”

The Soaring Eagle began the match with a 7-1 run. They added a 5-1 surge to take a 21-12 lead and never really was threatened in the first set.

“I talked to the girls a lot about Senior Night,” Ioane said. “They were fairly emotional during the ceremony (before the match started). You hope you can use that to build on, but not sure we did tonight. … I hate the word lethargic, but maybe we had a little of that to start.”

After the opening set, the Grizzlies played much better. There were a couple of lapses as Juan Diego went on a pair of 5-0 runs to build a 13-6 lead. But Logan battled back in the second to tie the set at 17-17.

Sharron Wallace struggled in the early going but had a pair of kills during a 7-1 run, while Shaylee Anderson also had a kill, while Olivia Sanchez served up an ace. Sanchez had two aces in the match.

Juan Diego used another 5-0 run to get some breathing room and finished off the second set with a kill by Valerie Sokolow, who had 10 finishers for the visitors. Rachyl Davis also had 10 kills for Juan Diego

In the third set, it was close throughout until the end. The Soaring Eagle used a 7-0 run to bust it open. Katie Jacox had two of her four aces during that stretch.

Logan was led by Sylvia Ostrusinik and Wallace with nine kills each. Kjerstie Yeates chipped in with seven kills and hit .500. Makayla Dahl had two blocks.

“From a right side player, Kjerstie kept us alive,” Ioane said. “I’m thrilled with my setter (Olsen), and my libero (Sanchez) passed super well. I just needed a little more oomph from my other players. Olivia served fantastic.”

This is the first year for Olsen at setter. She had been a libero in the past.

“It’s been so much different,” Olsen said. “I’ve never played setter, ever. It was really difficult, but we needed it.”
