Game Recap

Grizzlies run over by Buffaloes
By Shawn Harrison sports editor Sep 24, 2016

There was a stampede Friday night at Crimson Field.

The Grizzlies had trouble in the early going corralling the Buffaloes and had to play catch up the rest of the cold and wet Homecoming night. Tooele rumbled to a 42-24 region football win over Logan.

“Guys played hard for four quarters and you can’t ask anything more than that,” LHS head coach Jayson Anderson said. “We got a lot to learn for sure. … We start to get a little momentum offensively, then you see the little yellow hanky on the field right when you think you are going to turn the corner. We’ve got to be more disciplined in all facets of the game.”

Each time Logan (1-5, 1-2 3AA North) scored to try and get back in the game, the Buffaloes (5-1, 2-1) answered quickly with the exception of the hosts final touchdown.

Tooele did most of the damage on the ground. Eight different Buffaloes recorded rushes Friday, combining for 358 yards.

Lincoln Powers led the Tooele ground charge with 126 yards rushing on 17 carries and scored two TDs. Demetrius Smith had his number called 11 times for 89 yards and a score. Jeno Bins had two scores, running for 82 yards on just five carries. Bins also turned a short pass into a 79-yard score.

“We need to do a better job as coaches preparing our guys during the week,” Anderson said. “We just kept making the same mistakes over and over again. We just got to do a better job preparing them. We just got outcoached early in the game. It’s my fault.”

The Grizzlies tried to make it interesting in the second half. Trailing 35-10 at the break, Logan took the second half kickoff and ate up more than seven minutes before reaching paydirt. Eric Donaldson caught a strike from Jonny Parkinson in the back of the end zone from a yard out. The TD pulled the hosts within 35-17.

“The quarterback made a great throw and I tried to make a play,” said Donaldson, who had a game-best eight catches for 125 yards.

But like they did most of the night, the Buffaloes answered quickly. It took just 75 seconds for Tooele to get in the end zone. Austin Meono hit Bins in stride for a 79-yard TD and a 42-17 lead.

After each team turned the ball over on downs twice each, Logan put together one last scoring drive. Donaldson helped set it up with an over-the-shoulder 35-yard catch.

“When you are down, you need to keep trying to make plays,” Donaldson said. “Players make plays, players win games. We need to keep making plays and keep going.”

After the big catch by Donaldson, Parkinson found Charlie Jensen in the corner of the end zone from 20 yards out with 1:58 to play. It was the second time Parkinson and Jensen hooked up in the game.

The Grizzlies used their timeouts, and the Buffaloes punted for the first time in the game with 90 seconds remaining. Logan could not make it more interesting, though, ending the game when Parkinson was sacked.

Parkinson passed for 231 yards on 22 of 33 attempts with three TDs. He was also picked off twice, but Logan got one of those back when the Tooele defender fumbled during the return.

“I thought Jonny Parkinson played really well,” Anderson said. “He did a good job keeping plays alive, scrambling and making plays downfield.”

Tooele scored TDs on five of its six possessions in the first half. An interception by Brandon Dodd stopped the other Buffalo drive.

Logan actually scored on its first drive of the game. The Grizzlies reached the Buffalo 7, but had to settle for a 26-yard field goal by Jonny Guadarrama.

“We need to come out stronger,” Donaldson said. “We had some talks. … Our defense stepped up in the second half and our offense was rolling. The second half was much smoother than the first half.”

Logan finished with 286 yards of total offense — 190 in the second half.
